How To Change Moen Shower Valve Cartridge?

Changing the Moen shower valve cartridge is a relatively straightforward process that can be completed with a few basic tools. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to replace the cartridge:

  1. Gather The Necessary Tools: You will need an adjustable wrench, pliers, a screwdriver (Phillips or flat-head), and a Moen cartridge puller tool (if required) for this task.
  2. Turn Off The Water Supply: Locate the main water shut-off valve for your home and turn it off to cut off the water supply to the shower. This step is crucial to prevent water from flowing when you remove the cartridge.
  3. Remove The Handle And Trim: Start by removing the handle of the shower valve. Look for a screw or set screw on the handle and use a screwdriver or Allen wrench to loosen and remove it. Once the screw is removed, gently pull the handle away from the valve to expose the cartridge. If there is a trim plate covering the valve, remove it as well.
  4. Remove The Cartridge Retaining Clip: Depending on the Moen shower valve model, there may be a retaining clip securing the cartridge in place. Locate the clip and use pliers to carefully remove it. Be cautious not to damage the clip during removal.
  5. Pull Out The Cartridge: With the retaining clip removed, you can now pull the cartridge straight out from the valve body. Moen cartridges can be stubborn, so you may need to use a Moen cartridge puller tool to help with extraction. Follow the tool’s instructions to attach it to the cartridge and pull it out.
  6. Install The New Cartridge: Take the new Moen shower valve cartridge and align it with the valve body. Make sure it is inserted straight and fully seated. Apply gentle pressure to push it into place until it is firmly positioned.
  7. Install The New Cartridge: Once the new cartridge is in place, reattach the retaining clip to secure it. Ensure the clip is properly engaged and holds the cartridge securely.
  8. Reinstall The Handle And Trim: Slide the shower handle back onto the valve stem and tighten the screw or set screw to secure it in place. If you removed a trim plate, reinstall it as well.
  9. Turn On The Water Supply: Return to the main water shut-off valve and turn it back on to restore the water supply to the shower.
  10. Check For Leaks: Turn on the shower and let the water flow to check for any leaks around the valve. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections or consider replacing any worn-out seals or gaskets.
