How Does A Hydraulic Sequence Valve Work?

A hydraulic sequence valve is a type of pressure control valve used in hydraulic systems to control the order in which different hydraulic operations occur. It is designed to ensure that one hydraulic operation takes place before another, based on specific pressure requirements. Here’s how a hydraulic sequence valve works:

  1. Valve Construction:
    • A sequence valve consists of a valve body with inlet and outlet ports, a valve spool or poppet, and a spring or other mechanism that controls the valve’s opening pressure.
  2. Pressure Setting:
    • The sequence valve is pre-set to open at a specific pressure. This pressure is typically adjustable to meet the system’s requirements.
    • The pressure setting determines the threshold at which the valve will open and allow fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port.
  3. Normal State:
    • In the normal state, when the pressure at the inlet port is below the valve’s set pressure, the sequence valve remains closed.
    • This prevents fluid flow from the inlet to the outlet port, maintaining a blocked or closed position.
  4. Opening and Fluid Flow:
    • When the pressure at the inlet port exceeds the pre-set pressure of the sequence valve, it reaches the opening pressure.
    • Once the opening pressure is reached, the valve spool or poppet moves, allowing fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port.
  5. Sequencing Operation:
    • As fluid flows through the sequence valve, it activates downstream hydraulic operations.
    • The fluid pressure at the outlet port is maintained at the set pressure, ensuring that the subsequent hydraulic operation receives sufficient pressure to begin.
  6. Pressure Relief:
    • Once the downstream operation is complete, the fluid pressure at the outlet port decreases.
    • When the pressure at the outlet port falls below the set pressure of the sequence valve, the valve spool or poppet returns to its closed position, blocking fluid flow.
  7. Reset and Repeat:
    • The sequence valve is then ready for the next cycle. As the pressure at the inlet port increases again, it will open at the pre-set pressure, and the sequence of operations will continue.
  8. Application Examples:
    • Hydraulic sequence valves are commonly used in applications such as clamping, lifting, pressing, or any process where a specific sequence of hydraulic operations is required.
