How To Get Air Out Of A Hydraulic System?

To remove air from a hydraulic system, commonly referred to as “bleeding” the system, follow these step-by-step instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Ensure the hydraulic system is powered off and depressurized. This step is crucial for safety and prevents accidental movement or fluid discharge during the bleeding process.
    • Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as safety glasses and gloves, to protect yourself from potential fluid spray.
  2. Locate Bleeder Valves:
    • Identify the bleeder valves in the hydraulic system. These valves are typically located on or near hydraulic cylinders, actuators, or components prone to air entrapment.
    • Consult the system’s documentation or manufacturer’s guidelines to locate specific bleeder valves for your system.
  3. Positioning:
    • Position a suitable catch container or absorbent material beneath the bleeder valve to collect any fluid that may be discharged during the bleeding process.
  4. Opening the Bleeder Valve:
    • Using an appropriate wrench or tool, slowly and partially open the bleeder valve. Take care not to fully remove the valve at this stage.
    • Opening the valve allows trapped air to escape while allowing hydraulic fluid to flow out in a controlled manner.
  5. Purging Air from the System:
    • Activate the hydraulic system, typically by operating the associated machinery or actuating the components connected to the bleeder valve.
    • As the system operates, the hydraulic fluid flow will push air bubbles towards the open bleeder valve, helping to purge the air from the system.
    • Allow the system to cycle several times to ensure thorough purging of the air from the hydraulic system.
  6. Fluid Discharge:
    • Monitor the fluid discharging from the bleeder valve. Initially, you may observe air bubbles, followed by a steady flow of hydraulic fluid without air.
    • Continue the bleeding process until all air bubbles are eliminated, and only a consistent flow of fluid is discharged from the valve.
  7. Closing the Bleeder Valve:
    • Once air is completely purged from the system, carefully close the bleeder valve using the appropriate wrench or tool.
    • Ensure the valve is tightened securely to prevent any fluid leakage.
  8. System Verification:
    • Verify the hydraulic system’s operation to ensure it functions properly without any abnormal noises, vibrations, or performance issues.
    • Monitor the system for any signs of air re-entry, such as spongy or inconsistent actuation, and repeat the bleeding process if necessary.
