Reliability Where It Matters Most

Brazil is a hydraulic giant. From the vast reservoirs supplying the megalopolis of São Paulo (Cantareira System) to the massive irrigation pivots transforming the arid lands of Bahia and the intricate piping of Petrobras refineries, industrial pumps are the unseen workhorses of the nation. These are not small domestic pumps; we are talking about massive centrifugal, vertical turbine, and split-case pumps moved by electric motors ranging from 500HP to several Megawatts.

The connection between the motor and the pump is the single most critical point of failure.

The Silent Killer: Vibration. In a water treatment plant (ETA) or a pumping station, motors and pumps are often mounted on separate concrete plinths. Over time, ground settling (recalque) occurs. Or, thermal expansion from hot fluids pushes the pump casing upwards.

The Result: Misalignment. A rigid coupling cannot handle this. It fights the misalignment, transmitting massive radial loads to the pump’s mechanical seals and bearings. The result is leaking seals, overheated bearings, and catastrophic downtime.

Furthermore, in Vertical Turbine Pumps (used in river intakes like the São Francisco Transposition), the motor is often floors above the pump head. Connecting them requires long, balanced transmission shafts that must not whip or resonate.

At EVER-POWER Brazil, we engineer **”Vibration-Free” Drivelines**. Our Industrial Cardan Shafts act as the ultimate flexible coupling, absorbing significant misalignment and protecting your expensive pump assets from the stresses of the industrial environment.

Industrial cardan shaft connecting large electric motor to centrifugal pump in water treatment plant

Figure 1: In high-capacity pumping stations, Cardan shafts are preferred over rigid couplings because they allow for “Parallel Offset” misalignment, protecting the pump seals from radial loads.

Why Cardan Shafts Beat Flexible Couplings

Standard “jaw” or “grid” couplings can handle maybe 0.5mm of misalignment. A Cardan shaft can handle centimeters.

Protecting the Seal (Selo Mecânico)

A mechanical seal relies on a fluid film microns thick. Any radial movement of the shaft ruptures this film.

The Geometry: A Cardan shaft with two universal joints acts as a “spacer.” It converts radial misalignment (offset) into angular misalignment within the U-joints. The U-joints are designed to articulate; the pump bearings are not. By taking the angle, the shaft ensures **Zero Radial Load** is transmitted to the pump seal.

Critical Speed & Long Spans

For vertical pumps or flood control screws, the distance between motor and gearbox can be 3 to 10 meters.

The Risk: A long spinning steel tube sags and whips (Resonance) at certain speeds.

Ever-Power Solution: We use **Large Diameter Thin-Wall Tubes** or **Carbon Fiber Composites**. Increasing diameter increases stiffness without adding weight, pushing the critical speed safely above the operating RPM (1200/1800 RPM).

Corrosion Resistance in “Saneamento”

Water treatment plants use Chlorine, Ozone, and Fluoride. The atmosphere is corrosive.

The Spec: Ever-Power pump shafts are finished with a **High-Build Epoxy Marine Paint** system. For splines, we use **Rilsan Coating** or **Molybdenum Disulfide** to prevent “fretting corrosion” (rust welding) which locks the shaft length, transferring axial thrust to the motor bearings.

Tailored for the Fluid Type

Whether it’s clean water, sewage, or crude oil, we drive the pump.

  • Water Supply (Abastecimento de Água): Large Split-Case Pumps.

Requirement: **Balance G6.3**. These pumps run 24/7. Vibration must be near zero to ensure 10-year bearing life.

  • Sewage Treatment (Esgoto): Screw Pumps & Vertical Mixers.

Requirement: **Sealing**. The atmosphere contains H2S. We use triple-lip seals and stainless steel breathers to prevent gas ingress into the needle bearings.

  • Irrigation (Irrigação Agrícola): Diesel-driven Booster Pumps.

Requirement: **Torsional Damping**. Diesel engines pulse. We integrate flexible rubber elements into the shaft to protect the pump impeller from engine firing shocks.

  • Fire Fighting (Combate a Incêndio): Emergency High Pressure.

Requirement: **Reliability**. Shafts may sit idle for months. We use specialized grease that does not separate or harden over time, ensuring instant start-up.

?? Case Study: “ETA Guaraú” (Water Treatment Station), SP

Client: Major municipal water utility company.
Equipment: High-Lift Vertical Turbine Pumps moving raw water from the reservoir.

The Pain Point: The pumps use a 4-meter vertical intermediate shaft between the motor floor and the pump head. The existing solid steel shafts were suffering from “whirling” (vibration) at operating speed (1180 RPM). This vibration was destroying the steady bearings (mancais de guia) every 6 months, requiring dangerous and expensive maintenance in the pump pit.

EVER-POWER Diagnosis: The solid steel shafts were heavy, causing them to sag slightly and whip. Their natural frequency was too close to the running speed (Resonance).

The Fix: We replaced the solid shafts with **EVER-POWER Hollow Tubular Composite Shafts**.

1. Weight: The new shafts were 60% lighter, raising the critical speed significantly.

2. Damping: The composite material naturally dampens vibration.

3. Couplings: We used Disc Couplings at both ends to allow for thermal growth without lubrication.

Result: Vibration levels dropped by 85%. The steady bearings have now lasted 4 years without replacement. The reduced weight also made installation much safer for the maintenance crew.

For vertical turbine pumps driven by diesel engines.

Ever-Power Spec: Hollow shaft output, oil-cooled, with backstop (anti-reverse) to prevent water hammer backspin.

2. Spacer Couplings (Acoplamentos Espaçadores)

For “Back-Pull-Out” pumps.

Function: Allows maintenance crews to remove the pump impeller and bearing assembly without moving the heavy electric motor. We supply these in disc or grid styles.

? PRO TIP: Laser Alignment is Mandatory

Even with a Cardan shaft, alignment matters. While the shaft *can* take large angles, running it straight extends life. More importantly, check **Soft Foot** (Pé Manco). If the motor feet do not sit flat on the baseplate, tightening the bolts distorts the motor frame, causing internal bearing misalignment before you even start. Fix soft foot before installing the shaft.

NR-12: Safety in the Pump Room

A shaft spinning at 1800 RPM is dangerous. Brazilian **NR-12** standards require guarding.

  • Stationary Guards: For industrial pumps, we recommend fixed metal mesh guards (Amarelo Segurança) that allow visual inspection and cooling airflow but prevent contact.
  • Anti-Flail Brackets: For long spacer shafts, we install safety loops. If a coupling bolt fails, the loop catches the shaft, preventing it from whipping around the pump room.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Facility Engineers

How do I stop vibration in my vertical pump shaft?

Check three things: 1) **Alignment** (is the motor centered over the pump?), 2) **Balance** (is the shaft bent?), and 3) **Critical Speed**. If the shaft is too long and thin, it will whip. You may need to upgrade to a larger diameter tube or a Composite Shaft to stiffen it and move the resonance point.

What is the advantage of Rilsan coating on splines?

Rilsan is a low-friction polymer. In a pump drive, the shaft must telescope to handle thermal expansion. Steel splines often rust or fret, locking up. A locked shaft transmits huge axial force (thrust) to the motor bearings. Rilsan ensures the shaft glides freely, protecting the motor.

Can I use a gear coupling instead of a Cardan shaft?

Gear couplings are compact but rigid. They require very precise alignment (<0.05mm). If your pump and motor are on separate skids or concrete pads that might settle, a Cardan shaft is far safer as it tolerates millimeters of misalignment without damage.
